Arrow of God completes Achebe's African Trilogy — set in 1920s colonial Nigeria, telling the story of Ezeulu, the Chief Priest of Ulu, a god worshipped by six Igbo villages. As British colonial administration tightens its grip and the Christian church gains converts, Ezeulu finds his religious authority and personal pride increasingly tested. His decision to refuse the colonial administrator's offer to make him a 'Warrant Chief' — and his subsequent refusal to declare the Yam Festival on time — sets in motion a tragic chain of events that breaks both his family and the spiritual life of his community. Considered by many critics to be Achebe's most artistically accomplished novel.
