Set in the invented country of Malagueta, closely modeled on Sierra Leone and Liberia, the novel follows a mysterious founding figure with seemingly supernatural powers and traces the nation's history from its origins among freed and formerly enslaved people through to a more recent era of corruption and disillusionment. Cheney-Coker drew openly on Gabriel García Márquez, and critics have long debated how directly the book belongs in the magical realism tradition versus charting its own distinct path away from the dominant African literary voices of Achebe and Ngũgĩ. It won the 1991 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book in the Africa Region and remains his only published novel.
