About Naguib Mahfouz
About Children of the Alley
Children of the Alley (also published as Children of Gebelawi) is Naguib Mahfouz's allegorical epic that retells the stories of Adam, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad through the lives of inhabitants of a single Cairene alley over generations. The novel was banned in many Arab countries for its allegorical treatment of religious figures, and Mahfouz was nearly assassinated in 1994 for the book — surviving stab wounds at age 82. A controversial cornerstone of 20th-century Arabic literature.
