South Africa's Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000

Parliament of the Republic of South Africa

The Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 gives effect to the constitutional right of access to information held by the state and, in specified circumstances, information held by private bodies. It establishes procedures for requesting records, explains the duties of public and private bodies when handling requests, and sets out circumstances in which access may be refused. The Act also covers publication and availability of certain records, access to health and other records, protection of privacy and confidential information, internal appeals and applications to court. It is an important part of South Africa's legal framework for transparency and access to public information.
