Parliament of the Republic of South Africa

The National Water Act 36 of 1998 provides the main legal framework for managing South Africa’s water resources. It reforms the law relating to water resources and establishes principles for the protection, use, development, conservation and management of water. The Act provides for national and catchment-level water management strategies, regulates water use, and establishes arrangements for managing and protecting water resources. It recognizes water as a scarce national resource and provides a framework intended to support equitable and sustainable use.
