Nigeria's Freedom of Information Act 2011

The Freedom of Information Act 2011 provides for greater public access to records and information held by public institutions in Nigeria. It establishes a right of access to information and sets out procedures for requesting records and responding to such requests. The Act contains provisions on access to records, information about public institutions, requests for access, time limits, transfer and extension of applications, fees, record keeping and maintenance, and the destruction or falsification of records. It also provides exemptions relating to international affairs and defence, law enforcement and investigation, personal information, third-party information, legal privileges and course or research material, together with provisions on judicial review, exempted materials, protection of public officers, reports and interpretation.
