The National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008 provides the legal framework for waste management in South Africa. It seeks to protect health and the environment by preventing pollution and ecological degradation and supporting sustainable development. The Act provides for national waste-management strategies, environmental norms and standards, integrated waste-management planning, waste reduction and recycling, licensing of waste-management activities, contaminated land, waste information systems, compliance and enforcement. It was amended by later environmental legislation, including the National Environmental Management Laws Amendment Act 2 of 2022.
