National Credit Act 34 of 2005
Parliament of the Republic of South Africa
The National Credit Act 34 of 2005 establishes the legal framework for consumer credit in South Africa. It regulates credit providers, credit bureaux and debt counsellors, sets standards for consumer information and credit agreements, and addresses unfair credit practices and reckless lending. The Act also provides for debt review and debt reorganisation where consumers are over-indebted and establishes the National Credit Regulator and National Consumer Tribunal. It has been amended by later legislation, including the National Credit Amendment Acts of 2014 and 2019 and the Financial Sector Regulation Act 9 of 2017
